Seeking Refuge From Climate Change

My colleade Anna Watanabe wrote "Seeking Refuge From Climate Change"

Pondering Pie

I asked "Apple Pie is made of apples, Pumpkin Pie is made of pumpkins, What's the deal with Shepherd's Pie?" And Facebook friends replied:
Susanne Howard Shepherds pie is easy to make and eat. Just don't think about what it is made from I am making banana cream pie for tonight. It's ok to think about what it takes to make it
Ellen Winnie All depends where you source your meat.
NaShea Ridgeway It's lamb. Shepherd = 🐑
Andrew Dianiska most recipes I’ve come across are beef- what up wit dat
Aloysius McMurphy Andrew Dianiska If it’s beef, it’s properly Cottage Pie. I prefer it, but tastes differ.
Andrew Dianiska https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/24202/shepherds-pie-vi/
Andrew Dianiska https://www.pillsbury.com/.../00dda8fc-7206-41bf-bc2c...
Andrew Dianiska You’d think so, but apparently USA does it different https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/shepherds-pie.html
NaShea Ridgeway Andrew Dianiska Beef recipes are actually "country pie". Shepherd's pie is lamb.
Andrew Dianiska linked THREE recipes titled shepherds pie made w beef- apparently the category is more broadly applied. I used to insist it was lamb until I kept running across folk who made it w beef and googled around. Your argument isn’t w me, I’ve no dog in this fight
NaShea Ridgeway Andrew Dianiska LOL. They're just wrong, but it doesn't matter. It's like "Kleenex" is a brand name, but people use it to mean any tissue.
Andrew Dianiska tissues are alway made of paper.
Again, if half the folk call it SP when made w beef...
Hannah van Oijen You are all right. The only thing Shepherd's pie isn't made of, is shepherds. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepherd%27s_pie
Randall E. Winn The OnceUponAChef link explicitly states that the traditional shepherd's pie is lamb, which makes sense because shepherds have a lot better access to sheep then they do to beeves. I don't mind people adapting recipes but if it's got beef we should call it cowboy pie.
Just don't call it cow pie!
Andrew Dianiska Hannah van Oijen Which I believe was the OPoint.
Hannah van Oijen Andrew Dianiska Ah great, another man pointing out the obvious. I should have added a ;).
Andrew Dianiska op is a man- so...💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Justin Gelsinger I think it was traditionally lamb when that was considered a cheap, accessible meat, then transitioned to ground beef over the years as that became cheap and plentiful while lamb became a luxury protein. Lots of "peasant" style dishes work that way
Andrew Dianiska DADT
Randall E. Winn Carlos Espinoza
Carlos Espinoza I like pie
Danny Berry you sure you wanna ask that question?
Randall E. Winn Danny Berry I'm sure I don't want to know the answer LOL
Mark Edward Minie :)
David Seltzer Using the same criteria....what’s in pot pie?
Randall E. Winn David Seltzer there's never enough pot in that pie lol
Christine Brush David Seltzer originally it was chicken pot pie made from leftover chicken, but shortened it to just pot pie cause they were to lazy to say chicken pot pie.
David Seltzer Christine Brush 😎😎😎
Mari Wilson I'm more worried about shoefly pie.
Tempest Moore As long as u know what's in (singing voice) The best pies in london
Michael Pound you walk funny after mince pies

A Kind Memory

In the early 1970s I took the bus from my home in Washington State back to college in Michigan, by way of meeting my friend Barbara Vogt in Wisconsin, dropping her off to meet her boyfriend in South Bend, and planning to take the bus up to East Lansing.
As they drove off, I discovered the South Bend bus station closed at night, and my bus was in the morning. I resigned m
yself to spending the night outside, chilly but doable, and started chatting with this young family who were in the same position.
When it became clear that we were stuck for the night, one of them got on the phone and ordered a rental car. They invited me to come with them to their home in Benton Harbor, where they taught at a Seventh Day Adventist college.
Why not? They were friendly and it was better than waiting in the cold.
In the morning they fed me a breakfast that couldn't be beat. (It was the first time I tasted dried pineapple: delicious!)
In driving me to the bus station, they gave me a tour of their college, of which they were very proud, and why not?
I remember and celebrate their act of kindness every time I eat pineapple.

A Puzzle Trap, and some responses

A friend posted this puzzle:
Someone’s mother has four sons. North, South and East. What is the name of the fourth son. Private message me the name of the fourth son. If you lose, you promise to repost
Naturaly I thought I'd spotted the obvious answer to a simple puzzle, responded "Someone", and got dinged because that was the nature of the trap: an obvious answer that was wrong. Well, so I reposted as promised and collected answers. I don't normally participate in this sort of thing but since I gave into the impulse, I must pay the price, and had a bit of fun along the way.

Susanne Howard What is the name of the fourth son
Jill M Janda Wes
Kisa Emmanuel The namee of the forth son is SOMEONE
Marjorie Farmer Are we assuming Someone is a boy?
Kisa Emmanuel Marjorie Farmer yes
Rayna M. Alsberg Kim Kardashian? Oops. Sorry, not sorry.
Randall E. Winn Various answers, some culled from PM replies, some my own:
(1) "Someone" - this was my first pick. It doesn't seem to have been the intention of the author of this puzzle, see #2 below.
(2) "What" - the most popular alternative. Notice that the sentence "What is the name of the fourth son." ends in a PERIOD not a QUESTION MARK, making it a statement not a question (I did not figure this out.)
(3) "None of the names are shown in this story". Notice that "North, South and East" are preceded not by a COLON but by a PERIOD, making this a sentence fragment that could be meaningless, locations, or proper names. We just can't tell.
(4) "The name of the THIRD son is 'Someone'" - due to the lack of an Oxford comma, "South and East" are clearly one name consisting of three words.
(5) "There is no victory, there is no loss, therefore no need to repost". The request to repost does not establish a loss condition. Perhaps the drafter meant "If what you PM me differs from what I expected, you are a loser" but just didn't say so. Who's the loser now? ===
Have you any additions to this list?
Rayna M. Alsberg omigoodness. So complicated.
Randall E. Winn Rayna M. Alsberg Yes that's part of the fun haha

You have to admire their neighborliness

Over the weekend I walked back from the Westwood shopping center. When I take the best route through the neighborhood immediate to the east and uphill, I see this on a corner lot. It is inspirational!

Miner's Lettuce In Our Seattle Winter

The Miner's Lettuce  adds variety and vitamins to our salads and pizzas (...yes, I put greens on my pizza. Try it!).
For years, I treated it like a weed, ripping it out of my West Seattle home garden and cursing its tenacity.
One day, I saw it at the grocer. What?
I little research taught me that I'd been discarding perfectly decent food. No more!
Miner's lettuce is in season in April and May, but I'm seeing it grow in my south-facing areas today! Perhaps our moderate winter (so far) has persuaded it to give it a go. That's fine with me; I'll have a nice salad for lunch!
Notice that it is playing well with the green onions I got at the market and planted in my half-casks for fresh winter greens. (from the newly revived Seattle Urban Agriculture.)

Clearing Out Stuff

I'm cleaning house today and getting organized. Let's see what I find.
  • A nice thank you note from the John Muir Elementary School (back in 2018; I'll post about it back then)
  • USPS ID, from back when I tried to save my marriage by getting a regular job. It didn't work. I now see it might have been because of the back hair on my neck, omg why didn't I notice?
  • I scanned then recycled a lot of paperwork. I rarely refer to it anyway, and it's easier to find things in my carbonite account than to riffle through boxes of paper.
