Free Election Volunteering Opportunities

Upcoming Events In Support Of Democracy

(In Person events are in West Seattle; Virtual Events Are Everywhere!)

Ballot Curing

Ballot "Curing" helps people who have already cast their vote, but whose ballots have not been accepted. The mission is to contact them and help them solve the problem. Generally it is a positive experience because people who voted tend to want their vote to count!

Phonebanking

In Person in 34th District (WA)

Ongoing Opportunities

  • Environment Voter Project: Phonebanking through Nov 3. Call unlikely-to-vote environmentalists before the polls close in key states! Training provided/no experience necessary. Ok to use Google Voice or some other browser-based caller.
  • Pramila for Congress on Mobilize. Multiple and frequent opportunities focusing on the Seattle area.

Debunk: Georgia 2020

Ah yes, the legendary 2020 Georgia election: simultaneously the most scrutinized election in American history and, according to some people, the greatest criminal conspiracy ever assembled, somehow capable of fooling Republican election officials, Democratic election officials, multiple recounts, a statewide hand audit, courts, investigators, and years of scrutiny while leaving behind a trail of clues that Facebook commenters are apparently still solving.

Let's go claim by claim.

"It is known that procedures were not followed correctly."
Some procedures were not followed correctly in Fulton County during portions of the audit process. State investigators found errors and reprimanded the county. They also concluded those errors were the result of human mistakes, not intentional fraud, and did not affect the election outcome. The original machine count, hand audit, and recount all reached essentially the same result.

"Thousands of ballots were scanned twice."
This claim mixes together different counting processes. Investigators found double-counting problems in portions of the Fulton County audit, but those were audit errors, not evidence that the certified election results were inflated by thousands of fraudulent votes. Georgia's statewide hand audit and recount still confirmed Biden's victory.
Also, "I found an error in a recount" is not the same thing as "I overturned an election."

"DNA from all workers may determine who did it."
Unless someone is proposing an episode of CSI: Ballot Warehouse, this is a joke.
First, investigators attributed the counting issues they found to human error and training problems, not a secret criminal conspiracy.
Second, let's think this through. The election happened in November 2020. Since then, the ballots and related materials have been handled, stored, audited, recounted, reviewed by investigators, examined by attorneys, and endlessly discussed by people convinced they're one YouTube video away from cracking the case.
So what exactly would a DNA test prove?
That somebody touched a ballot?
Election workers are, rather awkwardly for this theory, supposed to touch ballots.
Finding a worker's DNA on election materials would be about as surprising as finding a chef's fingerprints in a restaurant kitchen or a mechanic's fingerprints under the hood of a car.
More fundamentally, the claim skips past the most important fact: there is no identified crime to solve. Investigations found audit errors, but not evidence that the election result was altered.
And even if someone insists there were paperwork problems, Georgia ultimately conducted a full hand count of roughly 5 million paper ballots. The hand audit and subsequent recount confirmed the same winner.

"It is known the proper zero procedure were not followed. Missing tapes and signatures."
Missing tapes, missing signatures, or failures to follow opening and closing procedures are legitimate process problems. Election officials should absolutely document everything correctly.
But here's the problem with treating this as evidence the 2020 result was wrong: Georgia didn't just rely on the machine records. It conducted a full hand count of roughly 5 million paper ballots in the presidential race. That statewide manual audit reaffirmed that Joe Biden won Georgia, and a subsequent machine recount reached essentially the same conclusion.
So even if some paperwork was sloppy, the existence of the actual paper ballots meant officials could go back and count the votes directly by hand. The hand count was effectively the election equivalent of saying, "Forget arguing over the receipt, let's count the cash in the register."
Missing documentation may show poor administration. It does not show that the reported winner was wrong when the ballots themselves were later manually recounted statewide and produced the same winner.

"It is known that thousand of people who moved out of the county voted in the election."
This is one of those claims that sounds dramatic until someone asks for evidence. Courts, state officials, and multiple reviews did not find enough illegal votes to come anywhere near changing Georgia's margin, which was nearly 12,000 votes. Georgia's results were confirmed through multiple counts.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Not forwarded Facebook posts.

"It is known the election equipment is insecure can be hacked with a ball point pen."
Here there is a kernel of truth being stretched until it squeaks. Security researcher J. Alex Halderman demonstrated vulnerabilities in Georgia's voting equipment in federal court. Those vulnerabilities are real and should be addressed. However, he also stated there is no evidence those vulnerabilities were actually exploited in the 2020 election.
That's the difference between:
  •  "This bank vault design has a weakness."
  • "Therefore someone robbed the bank."
One does prove the other.

"It is known that the QR codes don't necessary match the human readable."
Election security experts have criticized QR-code voting systems because voters cannot independently verify what the QR code contains. That's a real transparency concern. However, concern about system design is not evidence that QR codes actually changed votes in the 2020 election.
Think of it as an argument for better seatbelts, not proof there was a car crash.

"It is known the currently installed operating system is no longer supported and not secure."
Security experts have identified vulnerabilities and recommended updates. That's a legitimate security issue. But "needs patching" is not the same thing as "the election was stolen."
Every IT professional on earth just nodded so hard they strained their neck.

"If liberals insist there are no problem and fight election security, only the worse outcome for the country is possible."
That's a false choice.
You can support stronger election security, better procedures, updated software, improved audits, paper ballots, better chain-of-custody documentation, and rigorous oversight while also rejecting unsupported claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

In fact, some of the most prominent critics of Georgia's voting systems were election-security advocates who were not conservatives at all.

The adult position is:
"Fix vulnerabilities. Improve procedures. Follow the evidence."
Not:
"I found a loose screw in the airplane, therefore the plane definitely crashed."

Bottom line:

Georgia's election process was not perfect. Errors, procedural violations, and security
concerns have been documented and should be addressed. But after a machine count, a statewide hand count of roughly 5 million ballots, a recount, court cases, and years of investigation, no evidence has emerged showing enough fraudulent or illegitimate votes to overturn the result.

Or, to summarize the entire argument:

"We've got audit mistakes, paperwork problems, hypothetical security vulnerabilities, missing signatures, unsupported allegations, and DNA on ballots handled six years ago....therefore Trump won."

That's an impressive collection of complaints.

What's missing is the part where any of it changes the outcome of an election that was counted by machine, counted by hand, recounted by machine, investigated for years, and still produced the same winner every single time. 😏

Tuesday's Tiny Election in King County

Did you know that Tuesday March 16, 2010 is an election day in King County, Washington?

No? I didn't either, until yesterday's Sustainable Belltown meeting, where I met one of the guys running for King County Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

As the Seattle Times explained it today:
"On March 16, an election for countywide office will be held, but hardly anybody will notice. It will receive scant coverage in this paper or on the Web, and none on the TV news. There will be no absentee ballots, and the actual polling places won't be listed on the King County Elections Web site.

But the winner will help control a public agency with millions of dollars and the power to help shape land use and conservation in the 13th-most-populous county in the nation.

Welcome to the campaign for King Conservation District Supervisor. The Conservation District is an agency authorized by law in 1939 to support land and water use and conservation. It is funded by your property taxes and governed by both appointed and elected members..."

There is a longrun issue about how an election can possibly be fair when only a few thousand out of the more-than-a-million potential voters even know about it (only 196 people voted in the 2008 race!) When there's only one polling location in the entire city of Seattle, and half-a-dozen others throughout King County (a county that is larger than Rhode Island!), we have a problem. The solution to the problem is to have the County take over this election and absorb the cost, running the election along with our normal elections, but the County doesn't seem eager to absorb new costs in this difficult economy. For now take note:

Voters must present proper identification, like a driver’s license, passport or birth certificate, at the polling location.
I'm endorsing Kirk Prindle, because he went out of his way to come to our Sustainable Belltown meeting and talk about the issues (calling it "the most important election you've never heard of".) He says the other candidates in the race are o.k. too, and I like a guy who won't disparage the competition. But mostly, he seems to have the technical knowledge and positive attitude that I like to see in public service.

DLC Concedes Election!

Washington - Seeking to address a growing rise in the popularity of the Democratic Party, the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) announced today that it is conceding the 2008 election.

"Traditionally, the DLC concedes only elections where victory is not a sure thing," said a spokesman. "By refusing to demand full recounts or investigate Republican officials who purge voting rolls of Democrats, we have successfully avoided having to govern our nation. This lets us concentrate on our core competencies: hiring consultants, giving advice and raising money from corporations."

But recently, things have gotten out of control. In Washington State, Christine Gregoire insisted on a recount that forced a Democrat into the governorship. Across our nation, rogue Democrats who tried on a "50-state strategy" capitalized on last-minute GOP missteps, such as the Foley revelations and the "macaca" Youtube. As a result, Democrats failed to stay out of power in Congress.

Now a tsunami of voter anger against Republican misgovernment threatens to overwhelm the DLC's traditional defeatist tactics.

DLC is responding creatively; by immediately conceding the election to the Republicans, it can begin hiring consultants and raising funds on the basis of Republicans mismanagement for another four years.

And in 2012?

"There's always another way to lose an election," twinkles Bob Schrum.
