Iron Maxima

One of my favorite webcomics is the cheerfully cheesy, nerdy, cheese-nerdy Grrlpower.
In the discussion group someone pondered if the body of the team lead would eventually complete transformation into metal and become immobile, which prompted me to write this variation on Black Sabbath's "Iron Man"

Has she turned to gold?
Has her warmth turned into cold?
We can't read her face
It has stiffened into place.
Once she commanded,
Shooting orders and plasma fire,
Now she's immobile,
A situation most dire.

Her flesh gleamed with might,
Now it traps her in the light.
Power turned to weight,
Metallic is her frozen fate.
ARCHON is helpless
As metal replace her will,
Using their science
To keep her living still.

[Dabbler plays guitar solo]

In this time of dread
Sydney Scoville tilts her head,
Planning as fast as she can,
The Story Arc is Max again!

I Support #RecognizeKSRU

After I practiced next Tuesday's speech, I rewarded myself by reading the daily Schlock Mercenary. In the notes, the author talked about his next printing project and how he supported Kickstarter United, the unionization effort. I hopped over to their website and it all makes sense.

I support Kickstarter staff, who are working to form a union. The success of this and so many Kickstarter projects is due in part to the hard work of the company’s employees, and I believe in their right to unionize.
At this time, union organizers are not calling for a boycott. Instead, they’re asking supporters to raise their voices and make our solidarity known. Here’s how we can help:
  • Email Kickstarter’s senior leadership: kickstarter-sot[at]kickstarterunited.org post your support using #RecognizeKSRU
  • Post a picture showing your solidarity and tag @ksr_united download a version of our logo to use as your icon on Kickstarter, Twitter, and anywhere else
  • Back projects that show solidarity with Kickstarter United
  • Have another idea? get in touch!
I call on Kickstarter’s senior leadership to recognize the union now, and I hope you’ll join me. Solidarity forever 🤝

Visit their website!

And thanks to Howard Taylor for alerting us to this!

XKCD on Mortality

One of the most thoughtful writers currently in print is Randall Munroe's XKCD. For example:

My sentiments exactly.

He's even got a reasonable licensing/re-use policy!

Overcompensating on the Pope and Aliens!

From the excellent webcomic Overcompensating:
"You probably heard how the Vatican's head astronomer recently ruined believing in aliens by saying it is actually not necessarily contrary to Scripture.

I believed in aliens before it was cool, back when you had to worry about making God cry for doing it. While I have not ruled out this being part of a vast conspiracy against me by the Pope, I remain weirded out. Oh well, time to find something new to believe in that has absolutely no possibility of ever being embraced by organized religion, like... wow. That's pretty much all there was left wasn't there?

Anyway this is why I don't do history comics because I'm so crazy I actually think "Well it's possible for Star Wars to have existed sometime in the distant past so I'm gonna just make that Real Universe Canon." That's probably why I didn't do good in history either. Anyway pretty much everybody has got at least some 411 on Galileo and Copernicus but not a lot of people know the skinny on Giordano Bruno, the man that got the rawest deal in the history of trying to school some rubes on some science."
