QLSP Of The Week: Eastside Legal Assistance Program

The Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP)  provides access to justice through free civil legal aid to low income residents of East and Northeast King County Washington and domestic violence legal aid throughout King County.
ELAP need you! While several staff attorneys provide critical legal services to domestic violence survivors, most of ELAP's legal services come from volunteer attorneys through advice clinics, brief services appointments, workshops, and direct representation.
Location:
Most of ELAP's programs are in East and Northeast King County.
Immediate Need:
  • The area of biggest demand for direct services is in the family law area. ELAP can offer or connect you with free training programs to bring you up to speed or refresh your knowledge.
  • ELAP needs well connected corporate counsels to serve on its Board of Directors. Managing an organization of this nature and size requires solid business skills.
  • If you would like to help, but don't want to do lawyering, you are needed for other critical tasks:
    • Legal Advice Clinic Intake Volunteer
    • Phone Intake Line Volunteer
    • Communications Volunteer
    • New Media Volunteer
    • Data Entry/Office Assistant.
It's Easy!
If you are temporarily not engaged in the active practices of law, or are retired but still interested in putting your special skills to work, ELAP can provide you with the infrastructure you need while working with them:
  • malpractice insurance
  • prescreened clients
  • law office support, including paralegals, computers and copiers.
CLE Credit:
You can earn up to six credits a year (18 in a three-year reporting cycle) through volunteering at ELAP. See APR 11 Regulation 103(f).

Marriage Is More Sacred When It's Equal

Would you buy gas at a gas station with a sign saying "No Gays Allowed!"
Well, maybe it was an emergency; maybe if you had no choice.
But if you had the choice between two gas stations, one with the sign and one without, you'd go to the one that doesn't discriminate. You know you would; you might not be comfortable around gays but you're not a jerk.
So why is marriage different?
Why would you want to be part of an institution that says, "No Gays Allowed!"
Obviously, because you had no choice. The urge to marry is very strong, and no-one should be without the right. Up until now, you had no choice: you and I had to have a marriage based in part on inequality.
But now you have the choice. Wouldn't you go with a marriage that is not founded on discrimination?
Of course you would.
Because you're not a jerk.

Politics: Obama On Law Review, the Gay Marriage Pope, And More

There are still idiots who question whether Obama actually went to Harvard, claiming that no-one remembers him going there and there's no articles in the Law Review by him. These people are of two types:
1. Idiots who don't know how law reviews work
2. Liars who do know but make money by trolling.
A few minutes with the google produced this photo of Obama and the rest of his Law Review staff
http://ids.lib.harvard.edu/ids/view/6858157

I'm having a lot of fun with MS Paint, as the cheap alternative to Photoshop. The following are more-or-less original - that is, I added text to someone else's photos to make a point that I hope is sometimes funny, sometimes pointed. I created these mostly to express my thoughts on Facebook and similar venues, and a few people have objected, but (A) I can document facts to support my assertions and (B) politics is something all grown-ups have to participate in; your only choice is whether to do it or to have it done to you. At least the web gives everyone a chance ... however small ... to have our viewpoint seen, if we're clear enough, cogent enough or funny enough.

My Father, Obama And Their Birth Certificates

My father (long deceased) was born in Hawaii but I've only just now seen his birth certificate, which my brother David accessed when he visited the state recently. Some matters of family trivia (unlikely to be interesting to people outside our family):

  • Biograndfather's name was "George Harold"; "George" and "Harold" are both family names on my wife Kris' side: coincidence or fate?
  • Dad's mother remarried a man whose last name was "Winnie", which is why none of us have the last name "Raab"
  • Winnie-the-Pooh, our family totemic creature, lived under the name of "Sanders". Spooky!

Kris' Super Salmon Soup

There was not much soup leftover.
Which is always a good sign!
The Sunday Soup contest at Big Al's Brewery Tasting Room has a different mandatory factor each week; yesterday was fish soup, which neither of us had done much with in soup before. We talked it over and Kris came up with this, which was popular enough to get the most votes. Can you tell that, although she thought this one over carefully, she also kind of made it up as she went along?
  • Cube and steam some parsnips and a celery root, then mash them good
  • Brown some bacon in a cast iron skillet and fish the meaty part out
  • In the hot bacon grease, carmelize half a large sweet onion
  • Chop the bacon when it's cool
  • Put everything except the grease in a sauce pan with 4 cups of water and half a large can of pumpkin
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Take about 2 pounds of salmon (perhaps half of a side of a pink); put 4 springs of dill on it and one minced shallot
  • Steam the salmon 6-8minutes, then peel it, debone it, and loosely chunk it into the sauce pan
  • Bring it up to a low simmer. Get it hot, but not so hot that it scorches.
  • Add half a can of coconut milk, bring up the heat and enjoy!

#Devilgate Misses the Big Point

The Devil and The President
The History Channel, in its continuing effort to dumb us all down instead of lifting us up, has a series called "The Bible" in which it pretended that the Genesis is history.
(Let that one sink in for a moment.... and stop laughing!)
The big "Scandal" coming out of this is the producers' decision to visualize the Devil as what looks like Obama after thirty years of hard riding.
The producer disclaim any such intent; he says it's just a coincidence. Hey maybe it is; television is just FULL of skinny black men, right? You can't flip through the channels without seeing dozens of skinny black men playing heroes and villains, right?
Right.
Obviously the History Channel is just playing to its base, not necessarily by mocking Obama, but by casting its Garden of Eden scene without any regard to "really happened" (assuming that Genesis is history, which it is not, but let that slide ...)
If you REALLY wanted to do a HISTORICAL version of Genesis you'd cast Adam and Eve as Middle Easterners. It's not as if there's a shortage of Iraqqis looking for work!
And for the Devil? Nothing in the Bible suggests that the Devil in human form looked any different from anyone around him. He should have the same general appearance as Adam and Eve. If they are purple, he should be purple too.
Or ... you could be the History Channel ... Adam and Eve are white people and the Devil is black. Cuz, you know, that's just how it is!

Meatloaf ThisMuffins: Meatcake but in a good way!

There were a lot more but dang! they were good.
Meatloaf lets you use up leftovers and tag-ends in an efficient way. While I suppose that there may be such things as meatloaf recipes, the basic idea is to take some ground meat, add an egg or two so it holds together, and then add whatever leftovers you have in fridge and pantry, suitably cut up. Try to get some sort of balance of ingredients, and if it goes too far in one direction, add something that takes it in another direction. Put into the oven at 375F until it's cooked all the way through and there it is.
Meatloaf has two basic problems:

  • It's hard to tell when it's done, because you need to check the inside to make sure the meat is really cooked;
  • It's hard to tell when to stop eating, because after you finish a slice, there's all this unfinished loaf ready to be eaten.
Yesterday I stumbled upon a solution to both of these problems: meatloaf muffins! The same mixture that I was about to put into a loaf pan, I instead put into my silicon cupcake forms.
  • These baked quickly and it was easy to tell they were baked all the way through.
  • Eating a single muffin is a satisfying experience; I don't have the urge to finish the whole bowl because there's nothing left half done.
This particular batch of meatloaf included ground meat, two eggs, peppers, dandelion greens, oat meal, flax seed, leftover beans (squashed flat so they mixed in better), the tag-end of a jar of horseradish, ground garlic and bread that was heading toward staledom. The resulting combination was pretty satisfying, although I'm sure I'll never be able to get the exact same formula again.
The only downside of meatloaf muffins is that I'll never again hear George Carlin's brilliant "leftovers" spiel again in the same way, for I've shown that MEATCAKE

Saint Patrick was a holy man ...

Saint Patrick was a holy man,
With strategy and stealth,
He drove the snakes from Ireland;
Drink a whiskey to his health.
But drink not so much whiskey that
You lose yourself and then
Forget the good Saint Patrick
And see the snakes again!
