Thoughts on getting rid of clothing

What I'm thinking of today:
Clothing wears out; that's just a fact of life.
Other clothing are no longer appropriate; I am changing size as I get more fit, and it's nice to see some stuff will never fit right on me again.
However, it can be difficult to toss clothing. Clothing is not just a covering for the body; it is a repository for memory and personality. Pitching it, as needed, can feel like a loss. It also feels wasteful to clog up landfills. My contribution may be small, but it adds up.
Fortunately, recycling clothing feels like growth. The easiest way is when the clothing is still useful, just no longer appropriate for me. Reselling it at a consignment shop, on ebay or craigslist, might provide a little cash to sooth the sting of parting. Offering it through freecycle or one of the "Buy Nothing" groups of facebook offers a different reward, that of community. But there remains the old cloths that are too worn to give away.
A small amount of the fabric can be used in projects. I've used the canvas from old jeans as plant blocking cloth, and little bit of cotton fiber might be o.k. in the bottom layer of a planter. A few rags can be used around the house as rages, but there's a limit to how much of that I need.
Therefore I was greatly cheered to be informed of a place (conveniently located at my gas station) where I could drop off a bag of clothing, however worn, and the fiber would be recycled. As I go through my house, downsizing that which I no longer need, I find the process is simplified when I have a bag labelled "rags"

Tuesday Briefly

The major event of today (other than continuing to remain upright and breathing yay!) was submitting my brief in Brown v. McDonald. Through the Pro Bono Veterans Consortium, I have been helping a veteran with his disability claim. They hooked me up with an excellent mentor who gave me great advice on some points. Perhaps the biggest metahelp was in my sending the mentor work-in-progress; pride compelled me to make those preliminary versions decent, which motivated getting the work done way before the deadline (which was especially helpful when I ran into problems near the deadline) I had a lot of struggles with features of Word with which I can become unfamiliar, but eventually got past that and they are now funny. Now, not then! It also helped, in my opinion, that the record of events did not match some of the claims of the opposition. It was real roll-your-eyes stuff that I might write about after talking it over with the client. I am going to spend the rest of the week doing things I'd put off to ensure this brief was as good as I could.

Zumba Win!

Today I completed an important task: I filled my YMCA summer exercise card.
The idea is that when we attend a class at the Y, we get a sticker to put on a card and when we fill the card with stickers, we get a special T-shirt.
I loved little contests like this. It reminds me of the reading cards we would get from the bookmobile in grade school. Perhaps it was the combination of immediate reward for one class, plus a bigger reward for a longer-term goal, that suits well the nature of most of us.
However, time was running short as Labor Day approached. What with the house moving and reshuffling I was going to be a class short because Fauntleroy was closed on Saturday. I decided to hit the Sunday zumba, something I'd never done. The class was packed! I couldn't help wonder if there were others trying for their last sticker. The class was fun in itself, and great exercise, and I was happy to turn in my card.
