Veterans Field Guide to Government Shutdown
You probably know that federal government expires Monday, September 30, 2013; while Congress could prevent a lapse, prudence requires planning for the possibility of a lapse.
VA's 2-page information sheet, the Veterans Field Guide to Government Shutdown summarizes the services that will be available and those that will be impacted by a lapse in appropriations.
The Veterans Health Administration is forward-funded and so VA will still be able to provide some services. All VA medical facilities and clinics will remain fully operational including inpatient/outpatient care, prescriptions, surgery, dental treatment, extended care, mental health care, nursing home care, special health care services for women Veterans and Vet centers.
Additional services that will be available:
Payments to be made Oct. 1 include disability and compensation, and education benefits payments.

Larry Mac R.I.P.
Larry McCounaghie, of Auburn, died in his sleep Thursday evening. He was a good man, and my father-in-law. He is missed by all who knew him.
I'll add some photos later. This is sad for my mother-in-law Ginger; they had been together something like 30 years. He was also the effective father of my wife Kris and her sister Suzie, and an excellent grandfather to my niece Taryn.
He was age 64.

FOIA Machine donation letter
CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING
September 26, 2013
Dear FOIA Machine backer:
You helped create a powerful new tool for legally prying secrets out of government – and
showed how public support for the intersection of technology and journalism can help protect a
democratic society.
Huge thanks from the reporters, editors and tech experts at The Center for Investigative
Reporting and our FOIA Machine partners – especially the intrepid developers of FOIA Machine:
Mike, Djordje, Shane, Coulter and David. Here's the latest:
• Going above our Kickstarter goal will allow us to add key features to FOIA Machine. We'll build in
more support for social interaction, add an interface to expose the database of documents that result
from public records requests and create a more robust database of public records laws and local
contacts.
• Your help also triggered a $15,000 contribution from the Reynolds Journalism Institute and $10,000
from the Knight Foundation. So instead of releasing a bare-bones version of FOIA Machine in a
month or so, we will be able to expand its features and build a community of users.
• After we launch, CIR will turn FOIA Machine over to Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), at
the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
• You're encouraged to join an online preview of FOIA Machine for backers this fall. We'll email you
details soon.
Since we're deeply democratic about membership at CIR – some members give $5, some give
$1,000 – your Kickstarter backing for FOIA Machine entitles you to membership in CIR. Take a look at the
other side of this letter to see what CIR membership means to you and to the fight for government
accountability.

Membership Manager
