I'm thinking of the folk song "The Highman" not the more modern Johnny Cash etc song. It's the most interminable of the popular ballads and also, I have come to realize, a warning about poor life choices. The Highwayman himself seemed a talented individual so why did he turn to crime? Didn't the barmaid have any better options? I'd have more sympathy if there were better reasons given than passion, although to be fair I've done some pretty stupid things when I was young.
