Executive Director of Veterans And Friends of Puget Sound

Making the transition to being a serious, responsible and effective Executive Director of an innovative non-profit is not turning out to be as simple as putting a stamp on an envelope. However I have a good team working with me, and as long as I focus on the needs of the organization and of the people we serve, I can not fail.
The most uncomfortable part ... perhaps the only uncomfortable part ... of the gig is acting the role. Have I been naturally in control of every situation? Certainly not; quite the opposite.
But it is my job to observe, anticipate, prepare, manage and followup. This I can do, and if part of the job to go beyond wearing the costume and reading the lines, and to actually grow into directing, well, I can do that.
In fact, I have done that.
I suppose it started with the card - no longer reading "Volunteer", but "Executive Director". Symbols are magic!

Working a Donation

Cyril, Gafari and Don
A while back, one of the veterans whose paperwork we were helping with mentioned that as part of his job he had to dispose of a pallet of perfectly good frozen food to a charity. Could we help?
"Sure," we said. "Why not?"
Our friend John P Work of J P Work & Associates offered us space in his warehouse - he's a very helpful guy and if you're looking for food by the case, check him out because his prices are better than anybody's.
We started passing the stuff on to foodbanks case by case, which would eventually solve the problem, but it's a bit of a pain. Then I remember my friend Don Rupp, from back in the days at Mercer Island Thrift Store. He'd just had one of those automated LinkedIn postings, like it was the 2nd anniversary of his job or maybe his 3rd wedding anniversary or something.
It turns out he was at something called the Downtown Emergency Shelter Center. I went by to talk to him and got quite a tour of a few of their sites - they really do house and feed a lot of people. We made arrangements to hand off most of the food in one trip, and can rest easy that it's going to a good place. Cyril's brother Gafari offered to drive his van since it holds a heck of a lot more than my Saturn, and in a relatively short time it was done!
There's a bit of paperwork to do, but all-in-all this was a fun solution to a number of problems. Also it was a chance to reconnect with old friends and maybe make some new ones. Let's do more!
