The Things You See Walking Around On New Year's Day
Although as someone pointed out, roses do not walk around, on New Year's or any other day.
I had a smaller peach rose blooming near my kitchen last week, but I assumed that was helped by the warmth of clothes dryer. But this - this! - is just hanging over the sidewalk! We are having a very warm winter and I don't think the snow pack may be what we need for August water. But the flower is nice.

Who's a good boy?
![]() |
| Poppy is a good boy! |
Poppy's moms Hannah and Julie having been walking 2 or 3 mornings a week since the early days the Covid. It's been lifechanging, as I gradually improved my capability and learned a lot from our conversations. They are definitely among my best of friends!
Recently they added Poppy to their family, and what a very good boy he is!
I like dogs, but I do not have the time to give one proper care so I am grateful when friends have a dog - especially one who loves to come on our walks!

What message is encoded in the moss on this rock?
Wednesday morning walks through Lincoln Park can reveal the slow growth of life even on rocks - or is it a message slowly growing, if we could but read it? When I ask friends what the message may be, replies included:
- Just sit and shut up
- Don't panic
- "Mosses will heal the cracks in the earth from the anthropocene." Live on and prosper, Mosses!
- Having wonderful time. Wish you were here.
- Linus decoded it a long time ago.: The Great Pumpkin Is Coming!
- Be strong, don't worry about the cracks.
- Super second instinct!
- AND: I don’t think I can read moss code.

Fuschia You!
These are still blossoming. I suppose flowers like these are one of the reasons hummingbirds hang around here all winter

West Seattle Paw Paws
I did not know that a Paw Paw would grow in West Seattle, but here it is!
My waling friend Hannah remembered seeing a pawpaw a bit north of our usual starting point, but we had to walk around quite a bit to finally find the tree, was fruiting. It's not ready to harvest quite.
