The Importance of Careful Communication With Your Future Spouse

The very first home I ever owned was a house trailer whose previous owner had cats. I love cats, but…

... the trailer came with a nice thick carpet. Sherry and I decided we would sleep on it until we got a real bed. It felt like camping.

However…

In the middle of the night, every flea in that carpet woke up, ignored me, and lept on her.

“Randy,” she said, “these fleas are eating me alive!”

Now, the CONCEPT I intended to communicate was:

“In the morning, we shall purchase an appropriate flea‑killing product.”

…but the WORDS that came out of my mouth were:

“You should get a flea collar.”

She married me anyway.

New(ish) cat in my yard

I like cats.

A few years ago, I helped someone from the West Seattle Time Bank move boxes from their basement to their yard sale, and she insisted I take something in reward. This cat called to me, of course, but it has taken years for it to find its spot.

Rudi Foster Goes To Her Forever Home

Foster  Report

Rudi Foster (real name unknown) is a sweet grey tabby, likely female, perhaps 6-12 months old, and weighing about 9 pounds.

Origin: She approached a neighbor asking for food. She had no collar, chip, or “lost” announcement on the West Seattle Blog or Nextdoor. The neighbor cared for She but it became apparent She needed to find a permanent home. She stayed with me in my guest room for a few weeks. She seemed content to explore my house, but did get outside once and was gone for a few days. I found her under a bush and she came without coaxing.

Medical History: Unknown. No chip.

Appetite: Good. She prefers wet food and plenty of it. I have not seen her drink, but the water level in her glass has gone down.

Litterbox: She has always used the litterbox. It was filled with wood pellet litter; I don’t know how she would be with clay.

Play: She has enthusiastically chased the laser dot and a shoelace.

Sociality:

  • She is very friendly with humans. She meows when she sees a human, marches up to get petted, and enjoys sleeping on or next to a human.
  • She has been deeply suspicious of other cats. Whenever my two home cats look at her, she would hiss and eventually go hide. She has not attacked anyone.

She has been a pleasure to foster! I hope she and her new family have much joy together. Contact me anytime if there is any problem.

Warmly,
Randy Winn

Imp The Vulture

This is one of her favorite things to do. When she comes to me in the kitchen and makes the "follow me" stare, this is her usual destination.
She doesn't need me to hang around as she is fully committed to her work or play - I'm not sure which. After awhile, she wanders off so I need to check and close the window to conserve the heat or AC.

Imp swatting birds on TV

She doesn't do this as much as she used to, but every now and then ...

Gus, A Neighbor Cat

Gus is the monochromatic version of his brother Brownie, who are my little buddies, perhaps because sometimes I feed them when their humans are out of town

At And Near Home

So many friends and family elsewhere are shoveling snow, but today the first bee of the year started working in my yard!

On the way home from the vet, Shadow wanted to walk on her own so I let her down a few blocks early. She decided to explore Charles' and Ken's yard.
It is sad that she is dying, but I am trying to spoil her in her last days.

Ginny Watching Simon's Cat

Ginny watching TV will never not be funny. She especially likes "Simon's Cat".

Shadow approves the holiday gift from our housemate

Shadow approves the holiday gift from our housemate! She loves snacks above all else; she is willing to tolerate having her nails trimmed so long as she is crunching on a snack. I don't know whether this is a recently acquired taste or whether she has learned that if she meows loudly enough, then I *will* respond, but either way it seems to be harmless.
I have a perfect housemate; we have separate lives and don't run into each other much, as their spot is downstairs with a separate entrance, but we help each other out as needed and are friends. A shared love of animals helps!
Shadow doesn't know all this; she just loves the snack!

This Week Or Fortnight

She's not really grumpy, she's just concentrating

Classic Imp Watching The World Pose

The Season Is Blossoming

Spring bloom

Pansies Rock On!

I would love for this to be a bird feeder;
Imagine all those little cheepers on the wing!

As the sun got low, this shadow
appeared on a flower pot I am working on

A veritable array of onions
at the community garden near Pond Park.
Can you read the coded message?

Wake up and smell the flowers!
Or ... sleep in. What the heck, it's Saturday.

On the left: a nice house
On the right: the box it came in

When your car is bigger than your garage

This is true

This tree must have been HUGE but as the poem says ...

A Hummingbird just chilling,
watching me watching it

Sunday As The New Normal

Mt Urbanite is slowly shrinking,
One rock at a time

The raised be is slowly raising,
But picking the right stone takes time

I got my walk in today refilling the pantry at 14th and Roxbury with what little surplus I had left, then on to Target for cat food. The cats had decided they are not interested in the Purina anymore, but will consider Fancy Feast. It's more expensive, but I suppose they're allowed to have good taste (whatever that means for a cat) and there's no sense setting out food to dry out and be thrown away.

Ginny Approves Of The Gift Of Catnip

After our morning walk, Hannah gave me a catnip start (from their burgeoning catnip plantings). I set it on the raised bed while doing something else, and Ginny loved it.
